Arup
will be opening the week by hosting a light hearted workshop envisaging how
Sheffield might look in the future in response to how the world might change
over the next 40 years. Arup are involved in helping cities and countries around the globe
to respond to our changing environment. This hands on event will provide an
opportunity to imagine and debate the key issues, challenges and opportunities facing the city and how we might
respond to them to ensure we have a thriving city in the middle of this century.

OBSERVATIONS
ON URBAN DESIGN
Rob
Cowan and Alan Jackson Simpson will offer their unique observations on urban
design. Rob, founding director of Urban Design Skills, will give a talk titled
‘Pandora and her Trojan horses’. Rob has written numerous publications on urban
design, and has been instrumental in developing a series of innovative urban design
methods. Alan is an architect + professor of urbanism. His talk is titled ‘100 years
of urban renaissance’. Alan’s work in the UK and the USA has delivered numerous
successful urban renaissance strategies and approaches to working with urban
communities. He is co-founder of the Carnegie Mellon University Re-Making
Cities Institute Pittsburgh PA, and created and led the Yorkshire Renaissance
Towns and Town Team Programme 2001-06; and led the York City Beautiful project
2009-10.

STORY OF PARK HILL AND SHEAF VALLEY PARK
Mark
Latham from Urban Splash and Richard Watt s from Sheffield City Council will
talk about the development of Park Hill and its setting of Sheaf Valley Park.
Mark will give an overview
of the scheme, which will
include an opportunity to visit the show apartments, and Richard will focus on
the redesign of the Park to provide both a unique setting for the development
and a new green space within Sheffield city centre.
Following the talks, there
will be an opportunity to take a guided walk through Sheaf Valley Park, which will
conclude at the Sheffield Tap public house at Sheffield Midland railway
station.

Saaby and Kelvin Campbell will explore ways of achieving change within cities. Tina, who
is city architect of Copenhagen, will talk about recent developments across
Copenhagen, and the role of successful public realm in making a liveable and
attractive city. Kelvin, managing director of Urban Initiatives will explain
concepts introduced in his recent publication: ‘Massive small: the operating
system
for smart urbanism’, which outlines the processes and behaviours required to deliver
urban projects in the current challenging climate, and explore fundamental
questions relating to the changing role of the public sector.
