USP Annual Lecture 2016: Zoe Williams

Following on from the success of last year's annual lecture featuring MP Clive Betts, this year will feature Guardian columnist Zoe Williams delivering USP's annual lecture 2016. The event will take place in the Diamond building, Lecture Theatre 2 on Tuesday 8 March 4.30pm 6.30pm

Zoe will deliever Public Policy, Housing and Welfare Reform, her lecture will address some of the key issues facing the UK's housing crisis;
  • home ownership as an empowerment of the working class vs reality of landlord ownership of most council housing.
  • home ownership as the reward for hard work in youth vs reality of it being extremely unlikely before late middle age.
  • renting as a relationship of mutual flexibility between landlord and tenant vs reality of capital inequality and power imbalance. 
  • the housing crisis portrayal as a supply and demand problem vs reality of housing concentrated into the hands of those with capital
Zoe writes for The Guardian and the New Statesman. She writes political commentary, interviews and reviews. Her work has also appeared in other publications, including The Spectator and the Evening Standard where she contributed columns on a variety of subjects.
